Hi, Folks! I'd like to buy tickets for the Rolling Hills Asylum event in January, but since I live in the area (Buffalo,NY), I am aware that January weather can be unpredictable, at best. I am concerned that if we get a blizzard that weekend and can't get through, I will be out $179. That's a hefty amount of money to lose due to inclement weather. Is there a snow cancellation policy in place for this event? I'd feel better knowing I would get refund if the roads were impassable. Thanks for any info you can give me!

Hi LaViscom,
If the show is shut down do to weather(or act of god) we would reschedule for another weekend. I was told by several locals that i talked to that your road crew is good at keeping the roads open and if they do get to much to keep up with they are fast at getting them open after storms. They also said that Jan is hit and miss but most the big storms dont happen till after end of Jan and Feb. Is any of this sound right or were they blowing smoke?

I live in Minnesota, which is second only to New York in snow and cold. New York just gets less publicity for its arctic characteristics. Haha!
We have had events up here in Minnesota in the dead of winter, when it's sunny and -23° (actual air temp). The beauty is that we, like New York state, have a great little thing called "indoor heat." And in these states that are known for unpredictable snowfalls, we have great road crews and airports prepped for those inevitabilities.
I wouldn't let the "possibility" of bad weather prevent you from coming to this great event. Going to New York state in the winter is like travelling to Arizona in August. Heh. Just be prepared to dress warm.
Scotty
Look forward to seeing you at Rolling Hills!!

Hi, Britt!
Well, everyone's sort of right. We do have much more snow removal equipment out this way to handle blizzards, but we also have occasional snow bands that run in diagonals off of both Lakes Erie and Ontario, especially the "Pembroke/Batavia" band along the NYS Thruway (I-90). What often happens is that Buffalo will be socked in with travel bans, and the weather east (between Batavia and Rochester) will be clear. Or, Buffalo will be fine, then the poor SOB's heading east on the Thruway will hit a wall of snow in Batavia. Buffalo, when overwhelmed, will often put driving bans on those of us who live in the city, which means that I can't get out and east, even if the roads are better to the east of Buffalo.
I really, really want to come to Rolling Hills, but if we get a blizzard/travel ban and Batavia is is travelable, I'm out my $179.00. If it hadn't already happened to me once or twice during other ticketed events, I wouldn't bother to ask.
I guess I'll go ahead and register, but I'll be really, really unhappy if I can't get there due to weird January weather.
Thanks for at least letting me know if the entire event is snowed out there'll be another date scheduled.
Best, Lynne

Boy, Britt, I wish that was possible. Since I first started this topic, we had a major storm that shut down the NYS Thruway near Buffalo and left lots of motorists stranded, making the national news. My point exactly. Maybe you could run this past Jason Hawes - he grew up in the town one over from me (I was from Geneseo, NY, he was from Avon, NY - both towns just south of Rochester and near Batavia, NY). I still think that, if hosting an event in WNY in January, the organizers should have a refund clause in it in case the town (or airport) that attendees are coming from is closed (or travel bans are in place), they shouldn't be penalized. Even if you can't "do" refunds, how about credit for another event in the future? I'm hoping that it won't even be an issue, but it always is a crap shoot paying for events in the winter months around here just because of the blizzard potential. So, pretty please, could you check again and ask if there might be a special cancellation clause just for this one event if travel bans/blizzards/closed airports happen? Sorry to be a nag, but this is potentially a real problem for us Western New Yorkers who want to attend an event in our own backyard... Thanks, Britt! And by the way, Merry Christmas! ~Lynne~ (LaViscom)

Hi Lynne, Britt,
When I first saw the announcement for Rolling Hills I was all excited but then after a second look at the date I had the same thought as you Lynne - January in Western NY?? I was going to come up from Florida for this event but being originally from Olean NY I know of the weather hazards and unpredictability in the snowbelt during Jan & Feb. The comment about "Hit or Miss" is very true - its a crap shoot just like coming to Florida for vacation during Hurricane season. I think I'll wait till May for Stanley. Happy New Year! Bobbie

The only thing with the Stanley is that it is the TAPS gang, not the GHI peeps.

Well, everyone - I'm watching the extended forecast for this weekend at Rolling Hills, and we're not slated to get a blizzard, but we will get some snow Saturday night. Hopefully, it won't be an issue for those of us driving to the event in Batavia and East Bethany, NY. Safe driving/flying for all of us this weekend. See everyone there.
Best wishes, Lynne Buffalo, NY
